Cathode Rays on Proteins of Serum
نویسنده
چکیده
Exper iments conducted by Dr. Carrel in this labora tory revealed t ha t chicken fibroblasts underwent a ve ry characterist ic change when cul t ivated in serum which had been submit ted to irradiat ion b y cathode rays. The cells resembled in appearance those of colonies cul t ivated in proteoses or peptones. Their cytoplasm was completely filled with granulations but , unlike degenerating cells, t hey mainta ined long, sharp, active pseudopods. T h e y did not, however, undergo the rapid proliferatiofl which is caused by part ia l ly hydrolyzed protein. On the other hand, they multiplied slightly more rapidly than control tissues cul t ivated in port ions of the serum tha t had not been irradiated. These phenomena indicated tha t the cathode rays had produced certain chemical changes in the serum, probably in its protein consti tuents. The following s tudy was made in an a t t emp t to ascertain the na ture of these changes.

The Effects of Cathode Rays on the Proteins of Serum
The effects of cathode rays on the proteins of serum appear to be (1) denaturation of a large proportion of the albumin and globulin with the formation of products that are soluble at the pH of the serum; (2) the production of a tough and exceedingly insoluble substance on the window of the cell where most of the absorption of electrons occurs; (3) a slight hydrolytic cleavage of the protein mo...

A general X-ray tube has two electrodes, the cathode and the anode, with a high voltage applied between them. Electrons are generated at the cathode. After the electrons are emitted from the cathode they are accelerated by the high voltage toward the anode (positive) electrode. The high speed electrons hitting the anode material then generate invisible radiation i.e. X-rays. The energy spectrum...

Late into the evening of 8 November 1895 Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen, a physics professor at the University of Würzburg, made a discovery that would revolutionize science almost overnight. While conducting experiments with cathode rays in his laboratory, he remarked a peculiar glow with highly unusual properties emanating from a nearby fluorescent screen, the source of which he could not identify. T...

In 1895, the German physicist, Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen (1845-1923), who was 50 years old by then, studied cathode rays with Crookes tubes. He was more precisely concerned with the penetration of the rays through the glass. At the time, it had already been established that cathode rays could pass through the tube wall and penetrate a few centimetres in the air. In the evening of November 8, durin...

The presence of a low level of M protein in the peripheral blood <3gm/dl which is below the required cut off for the diagnosis of plasma cell myeloma is known as monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS). Elevated levels of serum M protein and detection of M band on serum protein electrophoresis (SPE) can occur in chronic diseases not related to B cell disorders and not always d...
